The Cardinia Food Movement

is driven by a group of passionate local residents, farmers, business owners, teachers, community workers and all round super bods!

We were seeded as a local food network group by the broader Cardinia Food Circles initiative in July 2017 and have evolved into the hands on, grassroots organisation we are today.

We are facilitated and auspiced by Sustain: The Australian Food Network. At the right time, we will become an independent incorporated association and aim to be the premier ‘go to’ ENABLING, SEEDING and SUPPORTING organisation for all things food, farming and health in our region.

We are working to activate initiatives across some of the critical gaps in our food system and believe that local problems require local solutions.

We are leading, supporting and enabling a range of activities to achieve the wider vision we share with our collective impact partners.

Our own organisational vision is for a vibrant, connected local food region that fosters pride in residents, nourishes people, nurtures country and provides fair food for all.

To foster a strong and proud regional food identity, we need mechanisms that connect people to the abundance of local produce and farmers, and that celebrate and promote local food outlets, activities and events. So we’re developing a local food directory, inspired by the work of the Willamette Food & Farm Coalition.

If you are in hospitality, retail, a farmer, a producer, or a food related community group we want to hear from you!

Protecting Farmland

We’re working with a range of local farmers and stakeholders to:

- Develop a strong evidence base that captures the value, diversity and importance of agricultural production across our region;

- Use this evidence base to develop advocacy platforms and mechanisms that support the local and regional farm and food economy

Community Kitchens Program

We’re working with local branches of the Country Womens Association (CWA) and a local nutritionist to develop a community kitchen program of engaging & accessible monthly cooking and nutrition workshops that rotate across the shire with a focus on seasonal, delicious and healthy cooking skills and hacks for busy working families.

Inspired by the Queensland CWA’s state wide Country Kitchens Program.

To connect, inspire, inform and engage our community with local food and farming. From film screenings to panel discussions, workshops to forums.

We’re currently developing a seasonal series of events that builds on the success of our December 2018 Farming: The Next Gen Film Screening and Farmer Panel Discussion.

Growing the Next Generation of Farmers

We’re thrilled to be working with Farmer Incubator to support their Pop Up Garlic Farming program in Cardinia in 2019 thanks to some generous scholarship funding from Cardinia Shire Council and the Garry White Foundation.

Four community members are learning take a crop of garlic from seed to harvest at a site in Nar Nar Goon North, and are being supervised and supported by an experienced organic garlic grower and Cardinia Food Network member.
