THE MOVEMENT

 What’s all this about?

This movement was seeded by the Cardinia Food Circles collective impact initiative.

It's a grass roots movement for change, driven by local people, seeking to support and develop local solutions to the challenges we face in food, farming and health.

Why?

Food sits at the centre of our lives.

It shapes our health & wellbeing, & the landscapes in which we live.

It impacts the strength of our economy and the vibrancy of our culture.

But our modern way of growing, transporting, processing, selling and consuming food has created multiple challenges.

30%

of waste in Garbage Bins in Cardinia Shire is food waste.

94%

of us aren’t eating the recommended Daily Amounts of Fruit & Veg!

16%

of Farmland ACross Melbourne’s Foodbowl, including within Cardinia SHire is likely to be lost by 2015.

14%

of People across our community worry about running out of food.

And yet…

Cardinia Shire is blessed with fertile farmland, innovative farmers and food businesses, and a rich diversity of food cultures, skills and knowledge.

Co-learning & Creating

The initiatives we work on range from weekly pop up fresh food markets to a community school farm project, from film screenings and events to community kitchen programs and direct advocacy to relevant government and industry bodies.

This work responds to local needs, and together we learn, create, adapt and grow solutions to fit our local context.

As a Collective

We work within the framework of Collective Impact, which basically means we structure our collaboration and set a shared vision and work plan that all of us work to. From individual residents, to local government, businesses, schools and organisations.

We have a roadmap that we’ve formed, together. And a vision that requires all of us to get involved!

From the Ground Up

We believe in local solutions to local problems.

We know our greatest strength is the sum total of the lived experience and knowledge of those who live, grow, farm, teach, shop, cook, sell and eat food across the region.

That’s why our local food network is made up by farmers, teachers, backyard growers, parents and passionate home cooks.
